finally, all done. As a last step I covered each with a coat of matte gel varnish. It took away the vibrancy of the colors and it really bummed me out. Up till that point I was pretty happy with these.

Hi Randy, Sorry you lost the color vibrancy. I like the combination of the newspaper print and the drawing/painting. I particularly like the second piece; fun!
What if you touch them up with some acrylic and then coat them with a gloss varnish? I know half the battle is knowing when to stop but it will be a challenge.
I can see where you'd like a few more vibrant colors, but the newspaper allows your audience a different perspective on individuals. After all, these people could be anyone we pass by daily and not really see them. Very unique approach.
